London Will be Testing Smart Crosswalks for Pedestrians

These smart crosswalks are being tested out in London for pedestrians to use. The smart crosswalks will be equipped with sensors and cameras, hopefully ensuring more pedestrians safety and security. The smart crosswalks are not all about the pedestrian, it is also to help ensure vehicles understand where it is appropriate to stop. The crosswalks will be tested out in London intersections this summer.

The system is called Pedestrian Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOT) and it uses the cameras to figure out exactly how many people are waiting to cross the street. It will then adjust the traffic signals according to the demand. The signal will last longer if there are more people waiting to walk, which is a great adjustment, because this will give the walkers more time make their way across.
Trend Themes
1. Smart Crosswalks - Using technology to enhance pedestrian safety and optimize traffic flow at crosswalks in urban areas.
2. Pedestrian-centric Traffic Signals - Traffic signals that prioritize pedestrian safety and accommodate for high foot traffic at intersections.
3. Internet of Things (iot) Sensors for Urban Safety - Deploying IoT sensors to monitor pedestrian and vehicle activity at intersections and signal traffic signals accordingly.
Industry Implications
1. Smart City - Building smart cities with innovative traffic management solutions for pedestrian safety.
2. Transportation - Developing transportation systems that integrate pedestrian safety with efficient traffic management.
3. Iot and Sensor Technology - Creating and implementing IoT and sensor technology to optimize urban safety, specifically at intersections.
