Daylight-Drawing Houses

The 'Shirokane House' is Designed to Maximize Daylight And Ventilation

The 'Shirokane House' in Tokyo is an ingenious piece of architectural home design from MDS architects. The core requirements for any house include security, privacy, daylight and ventilation; however, providing these basics can be challenging given the changing nature of the environment surrounding the house.

The Shirokane House is right across from an empty lot where construction could conceivably take place in the future. The construction of a large building there would deprive the house of direct sunlight.

The house has been designed in such a way that daylight is taken into the house from above and distributed downstairs; the living room is located on the top floor to take full advantage of this. Daylight flows from the terrace into the living room and is shepherded down to the downstairs dining room and kitchen.
