The Shirokane House is right across from an empty lot where construction could conceivably take place in the future. The construction of a large building there would deprive the house of direct sunlight.
The house has been designed in such a way that daylight is taken into the house from above and distributed downstairs; the living room is located on the top floor to take full advantage of this. Daylight flows from the terrace into the living room and is shepherded down to the downstairs dining room and kitchen.
