The Shanghai Jiuguang Center was designed by UNStudio and Nihon Sekkei. The building was unveiled at the ring of north Shanghai, adjacent to Daning Park, and boasts a semi-enclosed commercial complex.
The complex is comprised of stacked blocks made of different shapes and materials. Each block is arranged around a central courtyard, creating a geometrically-informed space. Shanghai Jiuguang Center includes a shopping mall, a department store, and a twin office. Overall, the complex features 350 000 square meters and marks the largest shopping center in the region. The retail complex is unlike the typical closed-box designs of shopping malls. Moreover, the building's bright white volumes were designed to resemble origami. They are clad with ceramic elements rotated at different angles.
