Studio Andrew Todd's Circular Theatre is Built Out of Wood

Studio Andrew Todd is the design team behind this newly modelled Shakespearian amphitheatre located in Calais, France. The theatre is built entirely out of wood with a circular layout that takes inspiration from plays put on by the Bard in the Elizabethan times at the Globe Theatre.

The structure's overall aesthetic is a merging of French and English culture with a nod to ancient times when plays were performed in circular spaces. The curved design and tiered seating allows all audience members to have a great view of the performance. The theatre is located in a forested area and the use of bamboo and wood in the architecture complements the natural landscape. The theatre is enclosed thanks to a glazed roof and it also includes a staircase to the higher tiered seats.
