Compartmentalized Component Seating Chairs

The 'Exploded Chair' Has a Fragmented Aesthetic

From a distance the 'Exploded Chair' looks like pieces of a seating chair floating in mid-air, but it's only upon closer inspection that the true design aesthetic is revealed. Designed by Joyce Lin, the 'Exploded Chair' consists of a wooden chair that has been dismantled with the various components positioned into corresponding clear acrylic cases in order to compartmentalize each piece.

The 'Exploded Chair' creates a fragmented aesthetic for the seating chair that speaks to a certain level of isolation that can exist between the natural world and the fabricated one. In contrast, the various wooden pieces of the chair within are not suitable for holding the weight of a sitter should they be put together, but the various acrylic boxes do so with ease.
