60s-Inspired Restaurant Decors

Michaelis Boyd Creates a Home for a Restaurant from a London Church

Architecture studio Michaelis Boyd is commissioned to create a welcoming and vibrant restaurant decor for Cantonese eatery Duddell's. The firm uses an abundance of brass elements and geometric shapes for the redesign of an old London Church. The result is a spacious high-ceiling interior with strong references to 1960s restaurant decor. Studio Michaelis Boyd draws inspiration from traditional Hong Kong tea rooms and fuses them with recognizable retro elements from the bygone era. Thus, the restaurant decor is successful in mixing culturally traditional and contemporary design elements.

Duddell's was founded in Hong Kong, and its purpose was to create a bridge between dinning and high art. The London location is meant to translate that message into the Western world. Thus, the new Duddell's "will act as a restaurant and gallery space, displaying collections of contemporary art pieces."
