Architects Made This Public Bathroom Surprisingly Sleek and Modern

Rural Japan might not be the first place you think of when it comes to a redesigned public bathroom, but that is exactly what happened. Kubo Tsushima Architects are reconsidering what it looks like to construct a restroom in a public place. Located in a Nakanojo parking lot near a historic temple, the modern washroom is little more than an outhouse, but you would never guess so simply by looking at it.

The minimalist structure features corrugated galvanized steel sheet for walls, which are essentially maintenance-free. The flooring is made out of a permeable but surface-strengthening material with "mortar steel trowel finishing." In addition to revamping the look of public bathrooms, this design is also extremely practical. The rounded shape is intended to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating in corners while also providing added privacy.
