Following news from the World Health Organization that processed meats have been linked with cancer-causing chemicals, Marks & Spencer is set to debut nitrate-free bacon later this month. As one of the first retailers to stock the new product, Marks & Spencer leads the way in terms of offering healthier meat options to consumers.
Marks & Spencer's new nitrate-free bacon was created in collaboration with Northern Irish supplier Finnebrogue. The two brands worked together to create a new form of streaky bacon made with natural fruit and spice extracts. The result is naturally flavored bacon that does not need the added nitrates that are primarily used to give cured meat its distinct pink color, texture, and flavor. As Kirsty Adams of Marks & Spencer explains, "We are very excited to be the first to launch an own brand with a back and streaky bacon, and will be looking to follow this up with cooked hams in the very near future."
