Undulating Cliffside Cabins

Mountain House by VDMMA is an Architectural Response to Topography

Where some structures do well to stick out as monumental masterpieces, projects like the Mountain House by VDMMA have a much more compelling contemporary appeal when they seem to slide right into the landscape.

This modern rustic dwelling can be found in Oranjezicht near Cape Town, South Africa. It's right at the base of the Table Mountains, which give the site a tremendous backdrop of enormous cliff faces. Despite sitting at the foot of the geographical wonder, the topography of lot is rather uneven. The architects at Van Der Merwe Miszewski assembled the overall structure as a cluster of individual pavilions, and using local stone, appear to be a continuation of the natural relief. The wavy wooden roofs add charming detail to Mountain House by VDMMA, mimicking the falling leaves of the surrounding trees.
