Photographer Miki Hasegawa did not have what you would call an "easy pregnancy." Filled with long hospital stays, imposed bed rest and critical bleeding, Hasegawa's pregnancy caused her immense physical and emotional pain. Following her daughter's birth, Hasegawa has experienced a deep-seated anxiety, and fear, for her child's safety.
In 'Jewels,' Hasegawa attempts to see the world from her daughter's perspective. She gets on her daughter's level -- literally, stooping down to a child's height -- in an effort to transform her feelings from fear to amazement. The series' title is in reference to the term Hasegawa's daughter has adopted for anything and everything she finds beautiful; in Hasegawa's eyes, of course, her daughter is the real "jewel."
The series is bathed in soft light, candied colors and the promise of a life.
