The Structural Geometry Pier Unfolds into a Dramatic Bayside Building

The construction of a pier simply requires a stable stretch of masonry that extends out into the water, but the Material Systems/Structural Geometry project strives to be so much more. Designer Sandra Herrera envisions a dynamic interplay of surfaces to abstractly complement the shapes of waves and surrounding hills and provide enclosures and exposed areas of repose.

Three interdependent skins model themselves into tectonic textures with straight folds and honed peaks. The fluctuating triangular shapes strike a visual dialog with yachts offshore, composing the perfect piece of architecture to host the 2013 America's Cup Sailing Regatta in San Francisco. Formed concrete and timber beams provide the supportive framework for the hypar geometries of the quay, creating intriguing angled planes to serve as spectator seating. Material Systems/Structural Geometry seems to extend from a level boardwalk to a beautiful buckling embankment.
