Mark English Architects has completed a remodel and small addition to a 1917 family home in San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood. The original structure was designed by Elizabeth Austin, one of the few American women architects practicing in the early 20th century.
Mark English Architects carefully preserved the historically significant facade while reimagining the interior layout to facilitate a more contemporary way of life. The project involved the meticulous restoration of external ornamentation. Mark English Architects converted the existing crawl space into habitable square footage and opened up the central part of the U-shaped plan. This created a dramatic double-height dining space at the heart of the home by removing most of the second floor.
The thoughtful material palette included clear red cedar shakes, engineered white oak flooring, custom hot-rolled steel fireplace details, and an acrylic bridge walkway. This adds texture and warmth to the ambience of the historic family home.
