Dorrington Atcheson Architects renovated a 1970s home in Auckland, New Zealand, into the 'Marine Parade.'
The original home featured cedar cladding, a gabled roof and split-level design. The architects main focus became simplifying the labyrinth-like layout of the original space without ridding the building of its retro charm. The architects added a pavilion, which extends from the central core, and contains the kitchen, living area and dining nook. The extension features a linear arrangement, which, along with the dining nook, is a nod to the 70s style of the original structure. For the sake of preserving space, the architects inserted a series of built-in shelving units.
When updating the exterior, the architects had two objectives: modernizing the facade, but making sure that it continued to complement the surrounding architecture.
