Putting the jungle back into the concrete jungle, Japanese architecture firm Sou Fujimoto has developed a modern day livable treehouse. The new high rise project in France goes by the name of L’Arbre Blanc, or "white tree."
A collaborative effort between Sou Fujimoto, Manal Rachdi, and Nicolas Laisne Architects, the "white tree" is one of twelve develop projects apart of the "architectural follies" series, and aims to mirror the 18th century chateaux located around Montpellier, France. The project echoes Sou Fujimoto's philosophy of finding harmony and balance in cruxes between natural and urban spaces. Developers stick to the roots of a tree trunk design by positioning balconies (or "leaves") in spots that will attract the most sunlight. To guarantee residents a little time in the sun, occupants are able to choose their space depending on personal schedules and lifestyles. Carefully placed, the balconies sprout from the treehouse outwards so as not to create shade over on another.
The breathtaking view and ingenious interior and exterior design of the treehouse causes me to seriously consider moving to France and living like a human squirrel.
