Singapore's Land Transport Authority's Buses Will Have Self-Driving Sensors

Self-driving cars, and even self-driving buses, have become technologically feasible, but the new system announced by Singapore's Land Transport Authority will turn regular buses into autonomous vehicles.

Purpose-built autonomous vehicles are excellent at navigating traffic and carrying passengers, but switching an entire city's fleet of public transport vehicles to autonomous vehicles is incredibly expensive. As such, the Land Transport Authority in Singapore has developed a way to get a fleet of self-driving buses without having to purchase new vehicles or scrap old ones.

Working with Nanyang Technological University, the authority has unveiled a system of sensors that can turn their current fleet into self-driving buses. As one might expect, the sensing equipment is complex, but it is still far simpler than a complete overhaul.
