The 'Kijiji Canada: Prohibit the Sale of Household Pets' petition takes on the heavy task of continuing the battle against puppy mills. Though Kijiji does not endorse puppy mills, by allowing anyone to sell domesticated animals on their site they are thereby allowing these unethical breeding farms to make use of their resources.
The aim of the protest, led by activist Barbara Lapointe is stated as, "this petition simply wants Kijiji Canada to remove the sale of animals and only promote adoption from registered animal rescue groups and shelters, and the re-homing of family pets (for a small adoption fee)." With over 27,000 signatures to date, this protest seems to have hit a receptive audience that likewise wants the puppy mill practice banned from the major crowd-sourced retail site. This petition is not without precedence as Craigslist has previously removed their animal section following public outcry.
