Kawong by Alvin Tjitrowirjo Fuses Traditional and Contempory Forms

Mixing different aesthetic techniques can have disastrous visual results, but one cannot deny the success of Kawong by Alvin Tjitrowirjo. The project incorporates the delicate patterns of Indonesian Batik textiles, cutting the overlapping circular motif into sleek metal frames.

The lightweight but well built units look to have been bent from long flat sheets into irregular quadrilaterals with curved corners. Next the metal seems to have been painted with a white powder coating to give each piece an exquisite quality that a bare alloy can seldom impart.

Individual modules can be stacked to form perfectly peculiar shelving systems, ultimately taking a range of unique shapes depending on the orientation of the decorative cubbyholes. Kawong by Alvin Tjitrowirjo can even become an elegant coffee table, presumably manufactured in a larger size.
