PHAB Architects took a 1920s Nestlé packing shed and transformed it into the Somerset Regional Art Gallery, an industrial art institution.
The design works to maintain the Queensland building's original history while showcasing works of art in a naturally lit and expansive setting. The industrial art gallery will showcase contemporary pieces as well as host workshops for visitors and feature a "sculpture garden."
It was important for PHAB Architects to preserve the natural form of the building and incorporate its heritage as it was said to be "a focal point of the Queensland town's economic and social life." The packing shed also withstood a fire that took out the rest of the factory in the 1950s. Due to damages in some parts of the building, PHAB Architects added some modern design features that work to reflect the intertwining of time and the multiple influences the building now holds a home to.
