Leiden, Holland, like many cities across Europe, is rich with history, and one of the darker points in the city's past posed an interesting architectural problem for Froscen Architects. The Dutch firm was tasked with making the most of a concrete World War II military bunker in the middle of a quaint neighborhood. Rather than simply demolishing it, Froscen Architects rose to the challenge.
Its design solution was to build micro homes on top of the brutalist bunkers. The four small homes are each just 38 square meters, but Froscen manages to fill that limited space with a double bedroom, a lounge, a kitchen and a bathroom.
The houses combine modern architectural style with the history of the Dutch city, preserving an important part of the foundation that makes up Leiden.
