'PROTEUS' is the name of a unique new ferrofluid installation from Zurich-based designers Maria Smigieska and Pierre Cutellic. While ferrofluid is a liquid that's highly interesting on its own, the designers created a wall-mounted table that invites people to look at its surface. As a result, the ferrofluid encapsulated in the display morphs thanks to a KUKA KR3 robot and an intervention from real-time face-tracking technology. Viewers are able to move their facial features to have the surface of the table, made up of ferrofluid-filled spheres, change before their very own eyes.
The interactive installation can currently be found at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria, as a piece of the Creative Robotics exhibition.
