Chinese architecture studio Neri&Hu has created a design to accentuate the location of the Flamingo Shanghai concrete offices.
To update the attic space, the architects inserted wooden, house-shaped columns with pitched roofs. The addition is meant to add vertical dimension to the attic, drawing the eye towards the sloping roof. The architects explain, "The insertion of house-like volumes into a landscape of concrete platforms breaks down the homogenous space [,] such that the roof is not just a singular element, but can be experienced on multiple levels, from various vantage points and on various scales." In fact, the architects use the columns to play with light, shadow and scale in order to create a range of different experiences throughout the space.
The ceiling is disrupted by the installation of clerestory windows, draped in black metal mesh, filling the office with natural light.
