The Cheng+Synder Syracuse Mural on the Lemp building is a way of commemorating Downtown Syracuse, New York for its industrial prowess as well as giving recognition to the presence of artists who call the area home. Irene Cheng and Brett Snyder bunched together a multitude of QR codes that from afar create a gray-scale historical image of a pump house and brine distribution center.
The two architects wanted to call people's attention to the fact that the city is rich in history. Known for its salt, Syracuse became a leading production industry for the United States. The Cheng+Synder Syracuse Mural also recognizes the leaps and bounds society and the city evolved in terms of technology and how the environment of the downtown core has changed; now there is a high population of artist organizations. Up close, viewers are able to see all the QR codes decorating the mural and may also scan them to be linked to the websites of notable New York artists.
