Evocative Whiteout Chapels

The New Bishop Edward King Chapel is Hauntingly Beautiful and Bright

The Bishop Edward King Chapel in Oxford is a magnificent literature and nature-inspired structure employing hauntingly beautiful elements of design to create a tranquil church setting that is contemplative both spiritually and physically.

The Bishop Edward King Chapel is almost entirely white on the inside and any observer's gaze will be moved steadily upward with the curves of the interior. Designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects, the Bishop Edward King Chapel is a marvel of design that manages to feel unlike most contemporary churches.

The direction of the project was heavily inspired by the word ‘nave’ being hidden at the of the poem 'Lightenings viii' by Seamus Heaney, as well as ships, and sought to create a gathering place for both sound and light.
