Extended Usage Drone Batteries

The New Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Pushes Battery Technology Forward

Tech like smartphones and drones are only as powerful as the battery technology within them, so a new fuel cell has been developed to revolutionize the devices. Called the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), the battery is purported by researchers to enable drones to fly for over an hour and keep phones operating for a week.

Developed by researchers at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech), the battery technology is designed to be as lightweight as possible. Being that longer flight times for drones usually means heavier battery packs, the new SOFC could mean big changes for technology manufacturers.

The SOFC is currently in prototype phase, but the researchers behind the innovation believe the technology has the capabilities to one day be used in automobiles.
