Antonín Hepnar Creates Contemporary Pieces

Working from his shop in a village near Prague, Antonín Hepnar creates beautiful pieces of wooden sculptures through wood-turning. The process involves sculpting wood over top the spinning axis of a lathe. Traditionally this method is used for porcelain or clay.

Hepnar infuses his work, including candlesticks, vases and sculptures with a sense of traditional elegance mixed with avant-garde aesthetics. The sculptures are simultaneously abstract and minimalist, a complementary pairing of qualities that makes for a series of visually appealing items.

In regards to the material he has chosen to work with, Antonín Hepnar says that "man is born into the wooden cradle, sits on the wooden chair his whole life, and dies into the wooden coffin." Rustic and refined, these sculptures are proof of the artist's mastery and skill.
