The Third Space

52 German design students had their work assignment cut out for them when they were asked to create The Third Space. They were assigned to create a temporary structure which fulfilled certain criteria.

The Third Space project was to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste in Munich.

While it's not entirely clear what the objective of filling a 200 square metre area was, the results are an amazing testimony for team effort and sheer hard work.

The sculpture is made up of 1.3 million humble cable ties forming a little nest suspended from a cable tie net above. Judiciously placed lighting give this sculpture a glow as if one is inside the bowels of some strange creature.

Even more impressive is the number of man hours - 16,870 hrs -- it took to create it. Assuming the 52 students didn't get additional help, each of them would have spent nearly two weeks straight on the project if they worked 24 hrs a day.
