Ken Yokogawa Heads a Massive Wooden Block Design Project

Through a painstaking process of trial and error, professor and architect Ken Yokogawa led a team of students from the Nihon University of Science and Technology, along with professor Jun Sato, in the creation of this impressive wooden block design.

Undulating, curving and arching organically, the construction that took two years to build consists of 7,000 wooden cubes that are hooked together by the corners with 36,000 screw-in hooks altogether. The final shape is a free-standing installation that seems to be balancing precariously on top of its massive legs, like a giant table that has been caught in the middle of disintegrating into thousands of pieces.

Ken Yokogawa calls his construction an inverted question-cube, a term which corresponds with the amorphous shape of this wooden block design.
