Foliage-Like Apartment Buildings

The White Tree by Sou Fujimoto Boasts a Modern Organic Shape

White Tree by Sou Fujimoto, an architecture firm based in Tokyo, Japan, is a residential structure that is inspired by nature, hence its name. Taking on a dynamic, organic shape, the structure has a slightly curvaceous silhouette, which is created in large part by the long balconies. These balconies are meant to simulate the look of branches and offer the best views of the surrounding landscapes.

Chosen by the city of Montpellier, France, as part of a competition for an ongoing architectural initiative called the 21st-Century Folies, White Tree by Sou Fujimoto is the second of 12 to be built in the city. Set to open in 2017, the tower will not only be home to apartments, but also a penthouse bar, ground-floor restaurant, art gallery and offices. The floor plans will be modular.
