Dutch architecture firm JWDA recently took on the Upfield offices as a new project, working to unite the company's different departments in a beautiful open-concept design. With careful planning, the firm managed to create sperate spaces for the departments, while also maximizing the natural light that enters the building. This provides the offices an airy feel, while also preventing any excess overlap and noise—features that are often associated with typical open-concept offices. As the Upfield offices are located within the top floors of a factory building, JWDA called the project 'The Attic.'
The firm explains its design choices, stating "First of all, a number of walls without architectural value have been demolished. This creates a more open space with more possibilities for the design. The different floors are connected by a void, creating an office landscape of five floors. The double wooden gable roof is now visible from different floors. The office landscape is given shape by placing various pieces of furniture. Every space has its own character within this larger concept Finally, a part of the tiled roof has been replaced for glass. The new workplaces are therefore provided with light and have a view over the river Maas."
