Under-Display Fingerprint Sensors

Qualcomm's Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor is Available in Demos

At the Mobile World Congress Shanghai event, Qualcomm announced that it is close to releasing ultrasonic fingerprint technology for any companies making use of its hardware technology. The device would allow users' fingerprints to be sensed simply by touching any part of their smartphone's display rather than by touching the phone's central button or a designated sensor on the back of the device.

Though under-display fingerprint sensors might not seem like such a drastic step forward, the technology allows for far more streamlined phone design. Manufacturers have the opportunity to remove the common smartphone button altogether, which not only allows for a cleaner look but also makes it easier to waterproof and dustproof devices, ultimately making high-quality technology better suited to real people's lives.
