Wooden Flat-Roof Pavilions

This Open-Concept Canopy by Ultramoderne Overlooks Chicago's Waterfront

Architecture studio Ultramoderne recently completed this wooden pavilion called the 'Chicago Horizon.' The enormous structure was created with the goal to have the largest wooden roof that it possibly could. This idea is unique because the design also aimed to be a wall-free pavilion as well.

The roof of the pavilion contains a single rectangular skylight that allows sunlight to engulf its entirety. Sitting on the lakefront of Chicago, the structure is made of long slates of timber shipped across North America. The timber is also used to create pillars that allow the wall-free building to remain sturdy and intact.

The 'Chicago Horizon' was honored as the winning design in the Chicago Lakefront Kiosk Competition. The whole project was created and completed as a collaborative effort between Ultramoderne architects Aaron Forrest and Yasmin Vobis and structural engineer Brett Schneider.
