This Shopping Mall is Inspired by Traditional Arabic Architecture

Architect David Adjaye is currently working with the 'Aïshti Foundation' to design a modern shopping mall that draws on elements of traditional Arabic architecture. Over the years, shopping malls have begun to draw a new type of clientele. These mega-malls now draw in wealthy consumers who are interested in shopping at luxury department stores.

Adjaye latest project is part of a collaboration with the the Aïshti Foundation to create a luxury shopping center that will also house the foundation's private art collection. The building itself features a luxurious interior that is both modern and traditional. The building is wrapped in a zigzagging pattern that draws inspiration from elements of traditional Arabic architecture. Because art and shopping are two very different worlds, Adjaye wanted the center to reflect the same juxtaposition between old and new. As Adjaye explains, "It's an art foundation, retail and a wellness center all in one."

The luxury shopping center demonstrates how malls are transforming across the world.
