This beautiful Tokyo home is constructed out of exposed concrete made from Southern Japan's volcanic ash. The amazing concrete is 100% recyclable, becomes more durable over time and actually works to deodorize the home and stabilize its internal humidity.
The Tokyo home is the work of Japanese design studio Atelier Tekuto. Due to the housing density in Japan's largest city, architects had to work with a fairly extreme space constraint. The Tokyo home is built on only 710 square feet of land. To use this limitation to its best advantage, Tekuto built the volcanic ash structure upwards, using high ceilings, open-concept rooms and large, triangular windows to give the edifice the feeling of space. From the outside, the Tokyo home looks like a single unified structure, but on the inside, a winding staircase connects four floors of living space.
