In London, architectural studio Haworth Tompkins creates an unexpected theatre entrance pavilion for immersive theatre company Punchdrunk. Perched between two heritage-listed warehouses, the low-lying rectangular structure boasts a facade that features bronze chainmail curtains. For those who might not be familiar, chainmail (sometimes chain mail) is a type of armor popular in medieval times. It consists of interlinked metal rings that form a mesh-like pattern. While during the daytime, the chainmail certainly creates an interesting aesthetic intervention, during the nighttime—the facade is illuminated, exuding a sense of intrigue which was very much the intent of Haworth Tompkins.
The theatre entrance pavilion for Punchdrunk contains an entrance foyer and a box office, as well as corridors that connect the adjacent performance spaces. The building is set to occupy this site for seven years.
