The Anstalten prison facility was designed by Danish studios Schmidt Hammer Lassen in collaboration with Friis & Moltke. The Corton-clad structure overlooks a fjord in Greenland's capital, Nuuk. This is the first high-security prison in the country. Previously, those sentenced for serious crimes in the country were relocated to Denmark. Now, the relocated inmates have the option to transfer back to Greenland's newest facility.
Designed to be a small village, the Anstalten complex comprises 8,000 square meters of units to accommodate 76 inmates. Workspaces, educational and sports spaces, a library, a health center, and a chapel are all included at the new location. The humane prison mimics the rhythms of everyday life. Forty of the inmate units are closed cells, while 36 are open, allowing inmates to continue to interact with their communities.
