Swirling Steel Chairs

The 'Sylph' Chair's Back Looks Like an Absent-Minded Doodle

With backs made from looping steel tubes, the Sylph chairs from Atelier Deshaus, a Chinese architecture and design firm, look as though its design is the result of accidental doodles on blueprint paper. Quite the opposite, the chairs are an intentional study on randomness and creativity.

While the seating portion and front legs of the Sylph chairs are made from several pieces of lathed wood, a single piece of white powder-coated steel tubing forms the back, arms and back legs. The majority of the backs of the chairs are thus empty space, with the steel only providing a framework of support for those seated on it.

This design can encourage sitters to lean forward and engage with the environment around them in a creative way, inspired by the doodled designs that grace the chairs themselves.
