Historic Superimposed Landscapes

The Sungseok Ahn Images Match Locations with Images from the Past

This enlightening project by artist Sungseok Ahn places images from the past upon their current backdrops by way of large projectors. Based in Seoul, Ahn has managed to split landscapes in two, focusing on their present day appearance as well as what they looked like during decades past.

Titled Historic Present, the live installations provide an intriguing sense of overlap. While the buildings and monuments are somewhat the same, seen in pillars and basic architectural features, the black and white photos display just how much change has been seen in Seoul. Nonetheless, the similarities showcase how designers and citizens have aimed to stay true to the original designs, updating them with attention to the way in which the structures were originally built.
