Repurposed Street Parking

San Francisco Has Replaced a Section of Parking Spots with Benches

Always ahead of the game in terms of dynamic mixed-use public spaces, San Francisco recently converted a stretch of street parking into a charming wooden parklet. Designed by INTERSTICE Architects, the public seating structure consists of four strips of wooden that differ slightly in shading. The sleek bench has the movement of a wave, undulating from one end to the other.

The innovative former street parking parklet also includes a refreshment area for dogs and a section of bike parking. The unique project is a great effort in encouraging the community to make the most of their local outdoor spaces and to walk and bike rather than drive. However, in a city that is already difficult to park in, there may be a few disgruntled drivers.
