Beachfront Shower Blocks

The Cook Park Amenities Will Change Your Mind About Public Restrooms

Australian studio Fox Johnston designed the 'Cook Park Amenities' on a Sydney beachfront. The design is comprised of three shower blocks clad in timber.

The commissioning council was looking for a way to rejuvenate the area, providing both visual appeal and security to the space. The architects were interested in subverting the stereotypical perception of public toilets, which are thought to be unwelcoming, unappealing and unreliable. In order to increase the sense of safety, the architects installed shared entrances, followed by unisex bathrooms.

For the exterior, the designers chose vertical slats of timber, making the building more accessible. Inside, glass-block windows and skylights allow natural light to infiltrate the space, creating a sense of approachability.
