Scaly Shingled Homes

The Brandt + Simon Architekten's Schuppen House Has an Amphibian Aesthetic

The Schuppen House is a design feat by the team at Brandt + Simon Architekten that creatively replicates the skin of an amphibian on the exterior of a shingled home. The abode looks as though it has scales with a series of gradient green panels that are stacked overtop of one another to create an intricate pattern. From far away it looks as though the house has a set of scales the way a snake would along its body.

The shingles feature a unique green colorway that moves from light to dark from the top of the house to the base. The individual pieces are rounded on the edges so that they create a texturized look throughout the siding of the home. While shingles are often used to cover roofs, Brandt + Simon Architekten showcase how the material can be integrated throughout a facade.
