Meditative Pillared Saunas

This Sauna Tower is a Tome of Rest and Relaxation

Modulorbeat, a German architecture collective, created a sauna inside a tower of stacked concrete for the city of Bochum.

The sauna, which is located on the site of an abandoned factory, is part of an annual art festival 'The Detroit Project.' The festival encourages practical and artistic projects that consider the city's changing economic situation. Architect Jan Kampshoff explains, "Our idea was to transform a former industrial site into a sauna, which is connected to the idea of doing nothing. People working in the mines or the factories receive healthcare and leisure time so when these companies disappear they need other ways to look after themselves."

The hollowed structure is made from cast concrete, ordered from a mining supply firm. The finished complex is ordered into three distinct zones.
