EL EQUIPO CREATIVO Renovated the San Martin Market

EL EQUIPO CREATIVO — the Barcelona-based architecture and interior design studio — has completed a renovation of San Martin Market, which is situated in the heart of San Sebastián's Romantic Area.

EL EQUIPO CREATIVO transformed the historic marketplace into a warm, welcoming, and deeply urban space that celebrates local identity through honest materials, a restrained natural color palette, and a thoughtful two-level organization that distinguishes between land-based produce on the ground floor and fishmongers in the basement. The new San Martin Market design draws on the region's agricultural and maritime heritage, with the ground floor featuring a woven wooden ceiling inspired by traditional harvesting baskets and local stone finishes, while the lower level incorporates references to fishing crates, wooden boat structures, and a palette of turquoise and green tones evocative of the Cantabrian Sea.

The project's emphasis on locally sourced materials — wood, stone, and iron — ensures that the market remains authentic and approachable.

Trend Themes

  1. Heritage-led Retail Design — Historic marketplaces are becoming differentiated civic destinations through interiors that translate regional craft, food culture, and architectural memory into contemporary customer experiences.
  2. Material-authentic Placemaking — Locally sourced wood, stone, and iron create opportunities for venues to build trust, sustainability narratives, and stronger emotional ties with surrounding communities.
  3. Zoned Food Experiences — Two-level layouts and category-specific atmospheres can reshape traditional markets into intuitive, immersive environments that clarify product origins and extend visitor dwell time.

Industry Implications

  1. Architecture and Interior Design — Design studios can differentiate renovation projects by blending preservation, sensory storytelling, and functional modernization within culturally significant public spaces.
  2. Food Retail — Market operators are positioned to elevate everyday grocery shopping into a destination experience that connects fresh products with regional identity and hospitality.
  3. Urban Development — Municipal and private redevelopment initiatives can use renovated markets as anchors for neighborhood revitalization, tourism appeal, and resilient local commerce.
