Flood-Preventing Parking Garages

Royal HaskoningDHV Created an Elegant Garage That Prevents Floods

Dutch engineering company Royal HaskoningDHV created a parking garage that's modeled on the shape of its surrounding dune landscape in Katwijk, South Holland.

Though parking garages generally aren't known for their aesthetic appeal, the creative use of structure implemented by Royal HaskoningDHV allows the functional building to blend into the land. With this, the parking garage seems to take up next to no space, with the only the glass entrances of the buildings popping up and gradual ramps leading vehicles down.

In addition to offering a modern space for drivers to park their cars in an unobtrusive way, the buildings were built in a way that helps prevent floods in the area. By making the structure flood-resistant, the engineering firm works to protect the Netherlands' coastline for the future, with the design winning it the 'Best Dutch Building of the Year 2016' award.
