Copper Riverside Homes

EVA Architecten Create a Structure with a Copper Roof & Red Brick Walls

This riverside home in the Netherlands evokes feelings of modernity and traditional elements. Utrecht-based studio EVA Architecten took on the project of Villa IJssekzig and made it so that the design perfectly ties into the surrounding landscape. While the conventional cottage vibe is communicated through the warm red brick facade, the copper-based roof gives off a rustic quality to the riverside home.

EVA Architecten intended to use rather homogeneous materials, in order to create a dynamic relationship between the building and its surroundings. However, the practice chose to introduce a "monochromatic material palette and crisply detailed form [for the house]." As a result, Villa IJssekzig's overtly modern influences are highlighted and subtly put to the forefront. While the side of the riverside home that faces the neighbors is closed off and kept private, the one that overlooks the garden "incorporates large glazed surfaces that wrap around one corner and create a visual connection between the interior and the garden."
