The rebellion of youth and energy of sports are captured in this Montreal artist’s public artwork for a sport center entrance. Using freeform bent laminations, Eric Sauve worked with maple wood strips like the gymnasium floor to create two pieces that seem to escape from the adjacent gym and explore and inhabit the lobby.
The artist gave each board a different shape. The boards join together in a wavelike form and a cylinder, while finding their own path out into space.
The title 'affranchir la ligne' means literally to set the line free. It also calls to mind the common expression "franchir la ligne," or to "cross the line," like the winner of a race or a rule-breaker, liberty and virtuosity combined.
