PriestmanGoode's Seat Design Can Increase Capacity by 30 Percent

The London-based mass transit design studio PriestmanGoode has released designs for a new seating system that could greatly increase the efficiency and comfort of commuter trains. The two seating designs, called 'Horizon' and 'Island Bay,' address the issue of overcrowding on the public transit systems of many growing cities, London included.

Of PriestmanGoode's two designs, Horizon is the most inventive. The new seating system would exchange standard seating for higher and narrower units that allow riders to perch rather than to fully sit. This perching design means that far more seats can be put into a train, ultimately allowing for more riders to enter the train comfortably.

The Island Bay is a more traditional seating concept, with four seats that face a central table. However, this design maximizes space by adding an extra seat at the end of each row of islands.
