'Plastic Air' is a Visualization of Airborne Microplastics

In partnership with Google Arts & Culture, Giorgia Lupi and Pentagram have created an interactive digital experience called Plastic Air. Data visualization master on the project, Giorgia Lupi depicts a beautiful yet alarming digital landscape of airborne microplastics. The reality she presents multicolored shapes floating across the screen. When selected, the microplastics reveal their chemical composition and what household items they might have come from.

Researchers are only just beginning to understand the impacts of these particles in the air on both human and ecological life. Lupi's project gives new resonance to the phrase "out of sight, out of mind," by shedding light on the up-and-coming research field. Based on real scientific data and research, Plastic air has 40 objects for visitors to find as they interact with the alarming project.
