Roya Aghighi Develops Fabrics with Photosynthetic Properties

In the contemporary age, fabrics with photosynthetic properties are a reality as biology and nature are invited into the design process on a bigger scale. Roya Aghighi — a Canadian-Iranian designer, experiments in this field. She releases 'Biogarmentry,' which is a project that combines clothing with photosynthetic properties.

That is, the garments that are part of the innovative collection can turn carbon dioxide into oxygen as people wear them. The fabric has a linen feel and is composed of nano polymers and chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which is the main active (and living) component of the project. It is a type of single-cell green algae.

Offered as an alternative to fast fashion, consumers will need to take care of the clothing with photosynthetic properties as if they were taking care of a plant.
