In an attempt to curb cellphone use while driving, British road safety authorities are utilizing a phone-detecting system. The new system is set to be piloted in Norfolk and can allegedly pick up the signal of cell phones and will then activate a physical sign to light up on the road. The system will not activate when the phone is being used with a Bluetooth device or with any other sort of hands-free device.
The detection system was developed Westcotec, a Norfolk-based road traffic technology company. The system was purposefully developed to "educate and inform the driver" with no intention of the system being used to punish drivers.
The signs and system have been set up in four locations in Norfolk and will once again be moved in a month.
