Ceramic-Roofed Cultural Centers

Kengo Kuma and OODA Repurposed an Old Slaughterhouse in Porto

Architect Kengo Kuma and Portuguese firm OODA teamed up for the renovation of an old slaughterhouse, situated in Campanhã — a freguesia in Porto. Known under the name of Matadouro, the building has huge historic significance as one of the region's "major economic contributors." The establishment ceased practice in the 1990s, but now the old slaughterhouse is being reintroduced into the narrative of Porto.

Kengo Kuma and OODA harnessed the high ceilings and the spacious layout to create a cultural center that "features art galleries and a library." The intent of the old slaughterhouse's renovation was to bring about a hub for the community to gather, socialize and learn. Kengo Kuma and OODA focused on the historic value of the building and were strategic in integrating it within the structure of the new establishment.
